Reiki and Anxiety
Reiki and Anxiety
Over the years, the Reiki precepts have meant different things to different people – when thinking about can aid the effects of reiki and anxiety, to most people it is always as a means to improve things in their lives. For the most part, this has been viewed from a common sense perspective . . . for example, to spend time worrying is a waste of energy – if we cannot do something about the situation right now, to worry about it is pointless, though sometimes common sense and behaviour are not always connected.
We can spend a lot of energy worrying, and at times may feel very justified in our rationalization with it. “If we do not look forward and anticipate problems ( i.e worry), then we cannot prepare and take action immediately to eliminate or minimise what we do not want to happen. “The fact that the probability of the undesirable outcome may be less than fifty percent, then we expend more than half of our current energy worrying about it, is often overlooked.
In addition, there is a difference between anticipating situations we may have to deal with in the future, for instance having an upset stomach or a headache due to a repetitive nature of our thoughts, and the reaction to the fear that something may occur. What is worse is that most of our worrying is unconscious and a habit! There is the anxiousness we feel when we travel – Will my bags arrive? Will I get a comfortable seat on the flight? What if there is a problem with the hotel reservation? We can do nothing about these worries, yet we unconsciously spend precious energy with them.
Reiki and Anxiety
As we ponder this precept, “just for today, do not worry”, see how much of our lives slip away while we are focused on the future rather than as to what is going on right now.
How many times have we not been really listening to a friend while our mind is on the future? Where are our minds when driving? Is it on the beauty of the seascapes or countryside or on the e- mail we need to send tomorrow?
We realise that even the anticipation of the coming day is a subtle form of worry. We look ahead to appointments, deadlines, and tasks with a sense of, if we are not mentally prepared for it all, something will fall through the cracks – hence another worry.
We must reflect spiritual optimism with a belief that things do unfold with a perfection that we do not always see, and must not feel a failure, if things do not always go perfectly in our minds.
“Just for today, do not worry” means more than the common sense interpretation of not wasting energy on something we cannot do anything about. It means more than remembering to be present in this moment instead of being worried about something in the future. More importantly, it means staying aligned with the belief that the universe is a friendly place, and there is perfection that we do not always see. In other words, trusting that things happen for a reason, and trusting that we can handle whatever unexpected events come our way, and trusting that there is always support if we need it. The more we live by this precept; we will find more peace and fulfilment.
